Hacker News readers found unfamiliar history near home by browsing Wikipedia from a point on the map. What does Local Wikipedia show you, and what does it leave out?

- Local Wikipedia makes a place the starting point for reading an encyclopedia.
- Its results are geotagged articles, not a walking itinerary.
- Wikipedia’s own Nearby feature finds local entries; its Android app can save articles for offline reading.
You do not need to know the article’s title
Local Wikipedia accepts a town, landmark or postcode, as well as the device’s location. It is an independent project, unaffiliated with Wikipedia.
Recent Hacker News discussion captures its appeal: readers described discovering unfamiliar local history. Others wanted a different radius or a way to enter a location without granting access to their current one. A dense city and a rural neighborhood present quite different browsing problems.
Sparse areas expand the search
The site says that when fewer than 25 items are nearby, it looks for the closest 25 within about six miles. Dense results are capped at the nearest 500. Neither rule guarantees 25 entries or a particular walking time.
Use the articles to choose what interests you, then check the actual route separately. A nearby coordinate is not the same thing as an accessible walking path.
The map of articles is not a complete map of places
MediaWiki’s Geosearch documentation illustrates how geographic article discovery works. A request specifies a center, radius and result limit; the response supplies titles, coordinates and distances.
This is a useful distinction when a familiar landmark appears to be missing. Geographic discovery depends on the article’s coordinate data. A short list does not establish that the surrounding area has little history or few places worth visiting.
For developers, the same distinction defines the product being built. A geographic article API can support a reading interface. Turn-by-turn navigation or a comprehensive directory needs additional information. A search radius is not an itinerary.
Nearby already exists inside Wikipedia
The NearbyPages extension provides location-based articles through Special:Nearby. Local Wikipedia offers another presentation of nearby knowledge rather than inventing geographic encyclopedia search.
The official Android app offers language selection and reading lists available offline. That makes it useful for keeping articles after the initial discovery.
Choosing a Wikipedia language edition is different from automatically translating an existing article. If an entry offers little detail, another edition may be worth checking.
Start with a neighborhood, find something worth reading and then decide whether to visit. The discovery tool supplies the reading list; route planning remains a separate step.
