Universal Clipboard Not Working? Check Handoff on Both Devices

iPhone Mirroring works and Handoff opens your apps, yet text you copy on the iPhone never pastes on the Mac. What is the clipboard still missing?

Universal Clipboard Not Working? Check Handoff on Both Devices
TLDR
  • Check the Apple Account, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Handoff on both the iPhone and the Mac.
  • Copy fresh content after changing settings. Universal Clipboard does not preserve a permanent history.
  • If it still fails, check updates and compatibility, restart, and record which direction and apps fail.

A shared Apple Account is only one requirement

When copied iPhone text does not arrive on a Mac, check the pair rather than just the destination. Apple requires nearby devices using the same Apple Account, with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Handoff enabled.

Signing into the same account does not cover the other settings. Put the devices close together for the check; the Mac user guide specifies within 30 feet, or 10 meters.

The menu names differ on Mac and iPhone

Use the Handoff setting itself, rather than changing who can send you an AirDrop.

DevicePath
Mac, Ventura 13 or laterSystem Settings → General → AirDrop & Continuity → Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices.
iPhone or iPadSettings → General → AirPlay & Continuity → Handoff.

Depending on the version, those menus may be named AirDrop & Handoff or AirPlay & Handoff. Earlier macOS versions put the switch in System Preferences → General. A different label does not itself indicate a compatibility problem.

Test a new copy, not the item from several minutes ago

The item remains available briefly, or until another copy on either device replaces it. A settings change does not make an earlier clipboard item permanent.

Try a small two-way check to describe the failure more precisely:

  1. Copy a short, distinctive sentence on the iPhone and immediately paste it into the body of a note on the Mac with Command-V.
  2. Copy a different sentence on the Mac and paste it into a note on the iPhone.
  3. If both work, repeat the original task with the app and content that failed.

There is no separate sending window to find. Universal Clipboard uses ordinary copy and paste across devices. If plain text works but a particular image in one app does not, you have narrowed the problem beyond “nothing transfers.”

Check updates and compatibility, then preserve the failure details

Apple’s troubleshooting steps are to install available software updates, restart the devices and recheck setup and proximity. If those do not resolve it, record the direction, apps and OS versions instead of repeating an undifferentiated “Handoff is broken” report.

For older hardware, use the Universal Clipboard section of Apple’s Continuity requirements. It lists iPhone 5 or later with iOS 10 or later, and macOS Sierra 10.12 or later on a 2013-or-later Mac Pro or other Mac introduced in 2012 or later. Requirements for a different Continuity feature are not a substitute.

App Handoff working is not conclusive evidence that copying works. In a recent macOS 27 discussion, users described clipboard failures alongside working app Handoff or iPhone Mirroring. Those are user reports, not proof of one cause affecting every device.

A useful support report says what was freshly copied, on which device, where you tried to paste it and whether the reverse direction worked. That separates a replaced clipboard item from a reproducible transfer failure.
